Summer Reading

I want to try and read every day with my kids and I'm wondering if any of you fine readers have some good suggestions for all three of my kidlets. Someone today at church, was talking about Where the Red Fern Grows, but I remember being the only one in 5th grade crying while our teacher read that and I just don't know if I want to deal with that. Their teachers at school have read them the basics-- Charolette's Web, James and the Giant Peach, etc. So do you lovely ladies have any ideas?

Maybe the Little House on the Prairie books? (Zac is reading Farmer Boy right now). Zac really liked My Side of the Mountain if Jonah hasn't read that yet.

Can I plug my sister's site one more time here? bookclub4boys.com (One of her kids favorites is 'How to Train a Dragon'- we haven't read it)

Have you read Bunnicula? Great Brain series? Encyclopedia Brown... Abby reads tons of fantasy so I can ask her what she suggests but one series she just inhaled is Warriors (about some wild cats)

I love Where the Red Fern Grows, but I still cry every time I read it (I read it like 3 months ago, again and cried again) plus the kid hunts a lot and kills a LOT of raccoons, so it is pretty gritty for your girls- I think I'd skip it for now. The other books that made me cry were Bridge to Terribithia and Tuck Everlasting.

Let me think some more.. I love talking books!

emily has the best advice for books!

lila and davis both LOVE, LOVE the Warriors series and there are several of them, so it could take all summer.

i'm reading prince caspian to adam right now and we're enjoying that.

we also loved 'holes', 'because of winn dixie', 'heidi', and 'little house'.

have you already read the harry potter books to them? i know that's an obvious suggestion, but they are great read-aloud books.

My kiddos are a little too young for these types of books so I really have no idea but I'll keep this as a reverence when the time comes.

FYI: our food blog seems to be the Stephanie/Kathy food blog! Get on there are make some comments! Put some stuff on there!

How can I check the food blog when there are no links here for me to get to it? Huh? Huh? Plus that would mean I had to cook something. Do you want a photo of my pbj sandwiches the kids eat 3 meals a day (that is an exaggeration.. they eat sugar cereal for breakfast and pbj only 2 meals a day)

Actually, Nick and Abby just made a cake so I'll get him to post the recipe over there.

Emily, I think that it is time for
you to reveal your famous wedding
cake- cake balls and how we enjoyed
them after someone's wedding.

I also know that Nick and abby made
a wonderful gooey cake last week with boiling water. Put these two
recipes on the blog and you may be
ready for Food Network's next top
chef.

Thanks for the great suggestions. Keep them coming. We are going to finish Mary Poppins (we started it a long time ago. It is not the movie surprisingly). We are also going to finish Wizard of Oz (also different from the movie) but I am not loving that. We have never read Harry Potter series, Im embarressed to say. I never caught on at the beginning and now it just seems too late to start.
